Om Sree Kallamman Deviye Namah

Indian history and culture originated from the Indus River valley, with the Sindhu Culture dating back to 3500 BC. The Indus region saw the spread of Vedic culture to the Indo-Gangetic Plain during the later Vedic period. Devi worship became popular during Lord Rama’s reign, and an Uma-Maheswar cult was found in the Indus area. The cult of saptamatha is also present in Kerala, with temples like Kodungalloor, Madayi, Thirumanthamkunnu, Chowalloor Mahadevar Temple, Chenthitta Devi Temple, and others worshiping sapthamathas like Brahmani, Maheswari, Varahi, Kaumari, Vaishanavi, Indrani, and Chamundi. The Kallamman Durga devi Temple represents this sapthamatha or ashtalakshmi cult, which was in vogue around 100 years ago. The goddess Kallamman Durga is believed to have been worshipped by merchants from Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai.

Temple History

River valleys are cradles of civilization and India is no exception to this. Indian history and culture grew out of river Indus and its tributaries in forgotten days. Sir John Marshall who did extensive excavation in Indus has assigned  3500 BC as the period of Sindhu Culture. From Indus it spread to Indo gangetic plain during later vedic period.

The period of Lord Rama witnessed the Aryanization of South India and the lord god went up to Ceylon or Sri Lanka. During the period of Lord Krishna, Devi worship became popular. Even in Indus area, something like an Uma maheswar cult had been located. Lord Siva there was found in a sitting posture surrounded by animals on all sides with a trishool in his hand (trident). This god is the real pasupati of Indus period. The mother worship too was there. Taken as a whole archaeologists had come to a conclusion of an Uma- Maheswar cult during the period of Saindhava culture. It was during the puranic period that we hear of ashatalakshmi cult. The cult of saptamatha is not unfamiliar in Kerala. In temples like those at Kodungalloor, Madayi, Thirumanthamkunnu (Angadippuram) Chowalloor Mahadevar Temple, Chenthitta Devi Temple etc, the concept of the worship of sapthamathas viz (1) Brahmani (2) Maheswari (3) Varahi (4) Kaumari (5) Vaishanavi (6) Indrani and (7) Chamundi is popular. Even in temples like those at Ameda the main deity is Nagaraja. Nagalakshmi is also worshipped separately along with saptamathas. We see Mahaganapathi and Veera Bhadra Swami in all saptamatha temples.

The Kallamman Durga Devi Temple is but a true representation of this sapthamatha or ashtalakshmi cult in vogue at least about 300 years ago. The Madan and Yakshi truly symbolise Uma and Maheswar as in modern temples. It is believed that merchants from Tirunelveli and Palayamkottai used to visit Thiruvananthapuram in olden days. According to Tirunelveli Sivan Pillai, merchants who stayed here in the capital for trade and commerce also brought with them their deity sculptured in black granite or Kallamman. Thus Kallamman became a goddess of the capital of Travancore in the 19th century particularly of the people of Puthenchanthai or New Market place that sprang up in between Ayurvedha College Junction to old Law College Junction (AG’s office of today). Those merchants, most of them belonged to vellala community and until the last half a century Kallamman Durga is no longer a goddess of any one particular community. HER omnipotent, omnilucent omniform is a form which every Hindu wanted to see. But alas! Kallamman Durga is yet to bless us completely. Pray with all vigour and sincerity. If so SHE will shower all her blessings on all. I dedicate this directory before the mother Goddess of Pulimodu for HER approval, acceptance and blessings in the years ahead.
